Who is God?

The answer to this question may have as many answers as there are people. Personally, I believe that God is the Creator of the heavens, and the earth. In the spiritual realm, God is the Highest of all Gods. The Good News is that God allows us to believe anything we choose about Who, or What He is. He even allows us to not believe that He exists at all. This doesn’t mean that we believe is true, but God gives each person the freedom to believe as they choose.

There are many people who form their beliefs based solely on writings from a book. There are many religious and spiritual books which use different names for God, and teach conflicting principles. Are all the books correct? Obviously, they can’t be!

I expect to read profound quotes about God from religious leaders, prophets, philosophers, and the like. I was surprised when I found a great quote about God and religion from Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence. To me, the quote reveals a very spiritual man with true faith in the goodness of God. Here is the quote;

Say nothing of my religion. It is known to God and myself alone. Its evidence before the world is to be sought in my life: if it has been honest and dutiful to society the religion which has regulated it cannot be a bad one.

To me, the above quote speaks to a religion not of words - but of service. If you haven't read some of Jefferson's quotes, they are truly worthwhile reading. The wisdom and vision of America's founders had to be divinely inspired.

Do human beings really hear from God? The answer is yes, they do. The voice may not come with His trademarked lighting and thunder but He is still talking to people who are willing to listen. In the Gospels Jesus said that God is seeking those that will worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.

In Spirit and in Truth

Scriptures and religious teachings can mean different things to different people. As I ponder what Jesus was referring to I believe that He was saying that God seeks people who are trying to live a spiritual life and love the truth. He may communicate in the form of imparting inspiration, intuition and divine revelation. God wants to reveal the Truth, but He can only reveal truth to those with an open mind to receive it!

The spiritual person tries to lift up others in words, and in deeds. They generally have an encouraging word and a helping hand for people in need. Their spirit is a that shines brightly in darkness.

Spiritual people may see the same realities as others but they view them in a different light. While many see their personal circumstances and world situations as hopeless, the spiritual person views them with hope and optimism. They know that with God all things are possible.

The hallmark of a truly spiritual person is that they always leave you feeling better, regardless of the circumstances. You may never know that the circumstances they are facing with are far worse than your own! Highly perceptive people may feel that they’ve spoken to an angel – and maybe they did!

The Bible contains an immense number of words. Some of the words are repeated many times and some appear only once. Such is the case for the word “day star” in 2 Peter 1:19 of the New Testament. The verse is shown below.

If we believe that there is a God that holds sway over all things then we have to believe in some sort of spiritual purpose to the spiritual warfare that some of us seem to attract. Before I go on I would like to clarify that to me the word "God" means a Supreme Being and Creator who is the God above of All. Spiritual warfare manifests itself in many different ways. It can come directly through people and it can come through your thoughts, emotions, dreams, and spirit. For some of us it has come in all of these ways along with open manifestations. God would say it is the pathway to freedom if you don’t lose heart on the journey… Truth is the foundation of the spirituality path – it is essential. No problem can be solved until you see the truth about it.

God would also say that it is easy to become discouraged along the way. All of the prisoners seek to keep you imprisoned just as they are. But, if you will just ask me to reveal the truth, I will. I know all, the beginning, the end, and everything in between.

Don’t be deceived by the world's wordsmiths, books written by men or by people of exalted status on earth. Have you ever wondered what God really cares about? Think about all the different religions and doctrines about God... How could so many be so different? In some religions we have thousands of denominations each with it's own teaching. We have religions that tell us to love ... and others that tell to kill. Ask yourself this... Are they from God?

I believe that God cares about people. I believe that God cares are spiritual principles like love, truth, faith and honesty. Hard to prove it by what we see in the world today but ultimately those are the principles that will prevail... May not look that way, but they will!

I remember reading Marcus Borg some years ago and particularly his book God at 2000. When I first read Marcus Borg I was concerned about much of his theology and yet I could not deny the spirit of God that flowed through his life, works, and profession. Having read at least a dozen of his books or edited works over the years, I've come to no longer be uneasy; in fact, I'm quite at ease with him.

If you believe in God you have to believe that His intelligence exceeds man's wildest dreams. For thousands of years religions have taught people about God through ancient writings and scrolls. It could be the Bible, Quran or a host of other documents revered in different religions. Why do they differ so greatly? Why does the same book contradict itself over and over again?
